Dark Autumn

The Colour Seasons are a starting point when we don't know which colours suit us best. We're all unique. The aim is to experiment and find what we like. If you don't like the palette recommended to you, trust yourself and wear the colours in which you feel most comfortable. These are just suggestions that you should adapt to your own tastes.

If this is a new subject for you, I suggest you refer to the Colour Glossary before starting.

The primary colour aspect of the overall appearance is dark, and the secondary aspect is warm.

Skin

The skin has a neutral or warm undertone. It may have freckles. The skin tones range from fair to deep.

Eyes

The eyes are dark. They have warm undertones. They can be green, hazel or brown. There is a high contrast between the white of the eye and the iris.

Hair

The hair has warm tones with golden or reddish highlights. It can be dark auburn, brown or brown-black.

Contrast

There are two types of contrast : either all the features are dark, or the hair and eyes are dark and contrast with light skin. In both cases, the contrast is high. The features do not blend.

Comparison

Dark Autumn and Dark Winter are sometimes difficult to tell apart, as both have dark features and a high contrast. What sets them apart is the warm (golden) tones of Dark Autumn, compared to the cool (bluish) tones of Dark Winter. Dark Winter also has a slightly higher contrast.

Colour Palette

The colours in your palette tend towards the warm end, meaning they contain more shades of yellow than blue. Even your blues have a touch of yellow, like turquoise.

The colours are high value, which means there are lots of dark colours. You have light shades, but these are support colours for the darker colours.

The colours may seem very saturated, as our eyes are more reactive to warm colours, but they have more of a medium saturation.

This palette doesn't represent all the colours that would suit you, there are many more. These are the main ones.

Neutrals

The neutrals in your palette are slightly yellowish and brownish. Your light neutrals are beiges and taupes. Your dark neutrals are browns and blues.

Black may work, but white is not part of your palette, as it's too harsh for your colouring. If you wear it frequently, mix it with the warm, rich colours in your palette.

Sister Palettes

Dark Autumn lies between True Autumn and Dark Winter. Compared to True Autumn, the colours are more saturated, less warm and darker. Compared to Dark Winter, the colours are just as dark, but more muted and warmer.

Depending on where you are in the Dark Autumn spectrum, you can borrow certain colours from your "sister palettes". If you're leaning towards True Autumn, opt for the palette's less rich colours. If you're leaning towards Dark Winter, choose the palette’s darkest colours.

Colour Combinations

You can combine all the colours in your palette with each other, but some combinations work better than others. The best ones are those that have the same level of contrast naturally present in your appearance. Dark Autumn has a high contrast, so your colour combinations should be too.

The easiest way to create contrast is to combine a darker colour with a lighter one. You can also create a hue contrast with two opposite colours on the colour wheel, such as green and purple. Another way is to combine a neutral colour with an accent colour, such as dark green with light beige.

Try to avoid only neutral or low-contrast combinations, as these will detract from your naturally contrasting appearance.

Not Ideal Colours

The cool, very muted and very bright colours are not ideal, since Dark Autumn is dark and warm.

Cool colours, such as bright pinks and bluish greys, will clash with your warm colouring. Very desaturated colours, such as pastel pinks and mauves, will tend to dull your dark, contrasting features. Very saturated colours, such as bright purples and electric blues, will be too harsh against your more muted appearance.

Patterns

Your best patterns are those containing rich and warm colours. Choose ones with high-contrast elements.

Metals

Your best metals are bronze, copper and gold. Silver is also suitable, as long as it doesn't have a very bluish tone. Prefer matte or antique finishes to luminous ones.

Complexion

The complexion products should have neutral, peachy or golden undertones. Prefer matte finishes.

Highlighters tend not to be ideal, as they look less natural on a more muted complexion.

Bronzers

Bronzers are ideal because they enhance your golden complexion. It should have peachy tones. Prefer matte finishes.

Blushs

The best blush colours are peaches, caramels and brownish reds. The least flattering colours are bright and cool. Prefer matte finishes.

Lipsticks

The best lipstick colours are peaches, apricots, corals, orangey and brownish reds. The least flattering colours are very bright and cool. Prefer matte finishes.

Eyeshadows

Your neutral eyeshadow colours are : creams, taupes, terracottas and browns. Your colour accents are : reds, purples, golds and greens. The least flattering colours are very bright and cool. Prefer matte or metallic finishes.

Mascaras & Eyeliners

The best mascara colours are browns and brown-blacks. Your neutral eyeliner colours are browns and olive greens. Your colour accents are greens, terracottas, purples and blues.

Light Makeup

A light makeup should reproduce the natural characteristics of your appearance. The complexion should be warm and soft, with a little blush/bronzer. The eye makeup can be light or defined, and the lips should be a warm colour.

Defined Makeup

A defined makeup should enhance the natural features of your appearance. You can simply intensify your lips and/or eyes. The complexion should remain warm and soft.
